Why Me? Perhaps the best explanation for why I created AcatastrophicEvent.com was to answer a question I read in Amanda Ripley’s outstanding book, The Unthinkable. Why is our society not doing a better job promoting survival skills to our citizens? The question has haunted me over the last few years as I watched America’s infrastructure fall apart, growing shortages of medicine and other critical necessities, and a society becoming more divided by the day.
I know there were several times in my life that I wish I had known before a momentous event what I learned by going through it. For instance, in 1996, Spokane experienced a severe ice storm, initially knocking out power to over 100,000 people and leaving myself and my family without power for over a week in mid-November. By the time Avista restored our electricity, it was a balmy 38⁰ in our house.
Another time was when I went to a grocery store during the COVID lockdown in early April 2021. I had never seen anything like it: hundreds of people emptying the shelves of a huge WinCo grocery store.
I was fortunate that both instances were inconvenient, but neither was a tragedy for me. But what if things had gone differently like my power not returning for 14 days or longer? What if I had an empty pantry and needed more than the bag of flour I bought? More than that, what would happen if I had a medical emergency at home and help couldn’t arrive for a while? How do you handle a natural gas leak, stovetop fire, or other emergencies that happen daily across the country?
