The uneasy awareness that the world is dangerous lurks in the dark corners of our minds and is buried in our deepest fears. Earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, droughts, civil unrest, shipwrecks, pandemics, tornadoes, flooding, war, and other catastrophes can happen anywhere and at any time.
Today, about 90% of Americans live in areas subject to earthquakes, flooding, fire, or other disasters. So, even as we strive to control our environment, we have created different opportunities for serious unintended consequences. We've altered crops to resist pests and thrive under less-than-ideal circumstances; those same plants leech nutrients from the dirt, making it more dependent on artificial fertilizers, and the soil becomes prone to erosion and produces less nutritious food. We've created medicines and instituted hygienic practices for waste, water, food, and pesticides to control weeds, insects, and fungi while creating superbugs and pathogens we can't control. Ultimately, humanity is still subject to the machinations of nature and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse – Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death. In fact, in 2023, over 62,000 people died from some disaster.
While it is true that over 62,000 people perished from earthquakes, volcanic activity, landslides, drought, wildfires, storms, flooding, and other disasters, it's equally important to acknowledge the countless lives that were saved. In the words of Saint Augustine: "This awful catastrophe is not the end but the beginning. History does not end so. It is the way its chapters open." This resilience, this ability to rise from the ashes, is what defines us as humans.
Although this website will cover tragic events, the purpose is to motivate you to look into the jaws of death and understand that most disasters are survivable. Consider the 2021 report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on U.S. airline accidents covering 1983–2000. It found that 95.7% of occupants had survived. And even as the airlines have changed the airplanes enough to make most passengers envious of sardines in their cans, the number of survivors has increased. I hope that together, we can glean expert opinions on emergencies that might strengthen your chances of surviving earthquakes, fires, floods, or other calamities.
Proverbs 6:6-8
Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.
Proverbs 22:3
The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.
